Sevilla won against Real Betis, 2-0, in the first of their two El Gran Derbi meetings at La Liga this season.
The victors took advantage of Guido Rodríguez being sent off at the latter part of the first half, with Marcos Acuña scoring ten minutes after they returned from the halftime break.
Compounding the bad luck for Betis was an own goal by Arsenal loanee Héctor Bellerín nine minutes remaining in regulation.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad maintained their grasp at the top of the heap by overcoming fellow Basque club Osasuna, 2-0. Mikel Merino converted at the 72nd minute, followed by an Adnan Januzaj penalty ten minutes later.
Sevilla have the same number of points with Real Madrid with 27, a notch behind La Real. Los Blancos edged out Rayo Vallecano, 2-1, in their match held on November 7. Both trailing clubs have a match on hand.
