Brought in in the second half as a substitute, Guiu needed only 23 seconds to convert the sublime assist from Joao Felix to the winning goal against Athletic Bilbao, La Liga 2023/24 Matchday 10.
The shot past Unai Simon was good, but what came later was more brilliant: the win, the emotions from the players, his family, and how his name was written in the club’s history.
I can’t breathe. I’m just enjoying the moment, I’m still flying,” Guiu said after the match. “I have been working hard all season to take any chances should they come. When I saw the goalkeeper coming off his line, I decided to shoot.”
Guiu made history
At 17 years and 291 days, it made him the youngest player to score on debut for Barcelona.
The striker has been with Barcelona for ten years, having risen through the ranks of La Masia – the club’s famed academy – and has scored five goals in five games for the under-19 team this season.
Manager Xavi, himself a product of Barcelona’s academy, has been comfortable promoting young players to the first team during his time in charge.
Guiu is now among only seven players this century who have scored for Barca aged 17 or under.
Earlier this month, his teammate from the academy and now-first team, Lamine Yamal, made a big impression with his first league goal. Yamal became the youngest player to appear in a competitive fixture for Barcelona in April 2023.
Who else made this elite list?
- Messi bagged his first at 17 years and 331 days old.
- Ansu Fati (16 years and 304 days old) and Bojan (17 years and 53 days) are among Barcelona’s youngest-ever goalscorers.
- Gavi scored his first for the club in December 2022 against Elche, which allowed him to become Barcelona’s third-youngest goalscorer, beating even Lionel Messi.
