La Liga Recap : Week 9

Barcelona lord over competition in bye week for Madrid clubs

Action resumes at La Liga with week nine after giving way for the international break. Here is a brief recap of select matches from week nine.

Barcelona back on track

FC Barcelona returned to form with a 3-1 victory over Valencia CF after suffering successive defeats before the international break. Ansu Fati, Memphis, and Philippe Coutinho scored for the Blaugrana after José Gayà opened the floodgates for Valencia early in the match.

The last time Barça were on the pitch, they suffered humiliating defeats to Benfica at the UEFA Champions League and Atlético de Madrid at La Liga just four days of each other.

Four clubs finish with clean sheets

Real Sociedad bucked the challenge of playing a man down for the entirety of the second half against Mallorca to escape with a 1-0 win. Julen Lobete converted at the 90th minute for La Real despite having only ten players on the pitch after Aihen Muñoz was sent off in injury time just before the break.

Meanwhile, Rafa Mir provided the only goal in Sevilla’s 1-0 conquest of Celta Vigo, placing the ball at the back of the net nine minutes into the second half. This highlighted the Andalusia-based club’s efficient play, making 50% of their shots on target while garnering 54% possession.

Over at the Mendizorrotza, Borja Iglesias clinched the winner with a minute left in regulation time to hand the visiting Real Betis three points after overcoming Deportivo Alavés, 1-0.

Finally, Espanyol blanked Cádiz CF, 2-0. Raúl de Tomás put one in a shade past the 45th minute to have the home side head to the lockers with the advantage. Nico Melamed then doubled the count 20 minutes into the second half to seal the outcome.
