Barcelona signed Gundogan

The treble winner with Man City has signed as a new Barcelona player until June 2025 with an option for a further season.

The German superstar is a perfect replacement for Sergio Busquets, who left the Catalan side at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Ilkay Gundogan was Pep Guardiola’s first-ever signing at Manchester City, costing the club just £21m. They built a dynasty together and won everything in seven years. He was a true club legend who went on to win everything with the English side, including the historic treble, before he finally departed.

The 32-year-old said: “Been a total privilege and pleasure to be part of Man City for the last seven years. I would like to thank Pep. To have been able to play under and learn from him for so long has been something I will never forget.

“I would also like to thank all my teammates – past and present – who have all played such a special part in making my time here so amazing. Also incredible City fans. I owe them all so much for their support. I will carry City always in my heart. Once a blue, always a blue.”

Barca during the transformation

With Jordi Alba and Busquets all left, Barca is in the transformation period, in which the club brings young talents while promoting those from the academy.

The likes of Gavi, Pedri will have even more significant roles under manager Xavi. At the same time, Frenkie de Jong and now Gundogan’s arrival will be facing the test of defending the Spanish top-flight champion they won last season.
