Muniain to leave Athletic Club

Muniain, 31, officially announced that he is leaving the club as a free agent this summer.

The team captain’s contract expires in June this year.

“You have been the best thing that ever happened to me. But now, my love, it’s time for us to part ways,” Muniain said.

The Spain international has played a supporting role under the management of Ernesto Valverde.

Atletico Bilbao recently lifted its first Copa Del Rey trophy in 40 years this season.

The Basque club announced that there would be an event to pay tribute to Muniain.

Spanish media outlet AS Diario reported that he wants to take his talents abroad.

Athletic Club will also bid farewell to veteran forward Raul Garcia, who is set to retire at the end of the season

Muniain arrived at San Mames at the age of 12.

The left winger joined the first team at 16 years old.

In 557 games played for Athletic Club, he scored 75 goals and provided 70 assists.

He became the second player with the most appearances in the club’s history, only surpassed by Jose Angel Iribar with 614 matches played.

Muniain also has two senior caps for Spain to his record.

Nonetheless, Muniain will end his campaign this season as an Athletic Club legend.
