Spanish football icon Luis Suarez passed away at the age of 88, he was a Barcelona legend who won La Liga titles two times in back-to-back seasons with the Catalan giants.

Suarez was a Barça player from 1954 to 1961. El Arquitecto is the only Spanish-born player to have ever won the Ballon D’or, which he did in 1960.

His 253 games for Barça saw him score 141 goals, winning two Liga titles (1958/59 and 1959/60), two Spanish Cups (1956/57 and 1958/59), two Fairs Cups (1957/58 and 1959/60), and the Ballon d’Or (1960).

Until now, Suarez has still been the only Spanish-born footballer to win the Ballon d’Or, which he donated to the FC Barcelona Museum in 2015.

Born in A Coruna on the 2nd of May 1935, Suarez started his career at Deportivo La Coruna in 1953 before moving on to CD Condal the following year. He then joined Barcelona in 1955, where he would become one of the best midfielders in the world.

He won six trophies at Barcelona, including 2 La Liga titles, but he also picked up the Ballon d’Or in 1960.

After the successful spell at Camp Nou, he moved to Inter in 1961 and continued to shine as he helped the Nerazzurri win back-to-back European Cups between 1963 and 1965.

Suarez is remembered extremely fondly at Barcelona, and they will likely be planning a tribute to one of their best players from the 1950/60s.
