Real Madrid’s Valverde La Liga’s best in September
Federico Valverde was Real Madrid’s shining light in their unbeaten September, claiming La Liga’s second Player of the Month award in the process.
The Uruguayan midfielder had a huge hand in all three wins by the league champions, as he beat out the likes of Barca’s Robert Lewandowski, Valencia’s Samu Castillejo and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams for the award which was first given to Real Betis’ Borja Iglesias last August.
Highly touted to succeed Luka Modric in the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield, the 24-year-old first made his mark in their 2-1 home triumph over the reigning Copa Del Rey holders last September 3, producing the final ball that led to Rodrygo’s 65th-minute winner.
Eight days later, Valverde showed his ambidexterity on the pitch in their 4-1 romp of Mallorca at the Bernabeu. Picking up the ball from Dani Ceballos on their own half, he ran for 56 yards before launching a left-footed curler for their equalizer just before half-time.
To cap it off, he then silenced the Metropolitano as he thumped home Real’s second in their 2-1 derby win over Atletico.
Not only were they winning domestically, Valverde had played a major role in their first two wins in the Champions League, picking up an assist in their 3-0 opening win away at Celtic and scoring the opener in their 2-0 win over RB Leipzig.
