What the LaLiga Standings Mean

The LaLiga table determines the race for the championship, European qualification and survival. The team finishing first at the end of the season is crowned champion. For historical context, see the complete Laliga winners by year list dating back to 1929. Final league position also influences domestic revenue distribution, which we explain in our LaLiga prize money guide. The leading clubs also compete for places in UEFA competitions, while the teams at the bottom face relegation.

  • Champions League Race

The clubs near the top of the table will be competing for UEFA Champions League qualification. The exact number of qualifying places can depend on UEFA competition results and access rules for the season. See our complete guide to LaLiga European qualification for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League routes.

  • Europa League and Conference League Places

Teams just below the Champions League positions can compete for Europa League and Conference League qualification, with domestic cup results also affecting European places.

  • Relegation Battle

The teams at the bottom of the final standings are relegated to the second tier. The bottom three positions — 18th, 19th and 20th — go down; see our guide to how relegation works in Laliga for the full rules, tiebreakers and promotion system. Every point becomes increasingly important as the season reaches its final matchdays.

How LaLiga Standings Are Calculated

A team receives three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat. For the full calculation, examples and maximum possible total, see our La Liga points system guide. The table also records goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference. When clubs are level on points, the official competition rules determine their ranking. Our Laliga tiebreaker rules guide explains why head-to-head comes before overall goal difference for two teams and how a multi-team tie is resolved.

LaLiga Standings FAQs

Who is currently top of the LaLiga table?

Barcelona lead on 24 points from eight games (+27 goal difference). Atlético Madrid and Real Betis have 19 points each, Real Madrid have 18, while Sevilla have 14 and Real Sociedad have 13. These positions reflect 78 completed games through October 12, excluding abandoned Rayo–Athletic.

The standings should be updated after every completed match. Early in the season, fixtures can be spread across several dates, so the table can change while a matchday is still being completed.

LaLiga has 20 teams. Each club plays 38 league matches, creating 380 matches across the full season.

A win is worth three points, a draw is worth one point and a defeat earns no points.
