What the LaLiga Standings Mean
The LaLiga table determines the race for the championship, European qualification and survival. The team finishing first at the end of the season is crowned champion. For historical context, see the complete Laliga winners by year list dating back to 1929. The leading clubs also compete for places in UEFA competitions, while the teams at the bottom face relegation.
-
Champions League Race
The clubs near the top of the table will be competing for UEFA Champions League qualification. The exact number of qualifying places can depend on UEFA competition results and access rules for the season.
-
Europa League and Conference League Places
Teams just below the Champions League positions can compete for Europa League and Conference League qualification, with domestic cup results also affecting European places.
-
Relegation Battle
The teams at the bottom of the final standings are relegated to the second tier. The bottom three positions — 18th, 19th and 20th — go down; see our guide to how relegation works in Laliga for the full rules, tiebreakers and promotion system. Every point becomes increasingly important as the season reaches its final matchdays.
How LaLiga Standings Are Calculated
A team receives three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat. The table also records goals scored, goals conceded and goal difference. When clubs are level on points, the official competition rules determine their ranking.
| Statistic | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P | Matches played |
| W | Matches won |
| D | Matches drawn |
| L | Matches lost |
| GF | Goals scored |
| GA | Goals conceded |
| GD | Goal difference (GF minus GA) |
| Pts | Total points |
