Brazil coach on Vinicius Jr.’s discrimination
The Real Madrid forward has experienced multiple racist abuse for the past few years.
Recently, Osasuna fans shouted “Vinicius, die” in Madrid’s La Liga match.
Atletico Madrid fans also allegedly chanted “chimpanzee” as a racial slur towards the Brazilian.
There were also reports of hate chants against Vinícius Jr. before the Barcelona-Napoli match.
Brazil will take on England in a friendly at Wembley before facing Spain at Santiago Bernabeu.
Dorival said the team will protect Vinicius Jr. from any potential racial discrimination.
“We will need to analyze and balance all of the information in such moments. But we need to be prepared to take drastic action if it happens again,” Dorival told the Guardian.
“Vinícius is still a boy. He is still finishing his education, and he cannot be treated like this by this minority.”
LaLiga has released a statement condemning racist fans, while Madrid filed a complaint with the Spanish state prosecutors over the alleged racist insults towards Vini Jr.
Harsher punishments
Dorival said the authorities should hand harsher punishments for the perpetrators.
“Sadly it [racism] is happening all over the world,” he said. “Ignorance still remains.”
“The authorities must take more severe action. This situation with Vinícius, in particular, has already crossed the line. The Spanish people in general are a very friendly, respectful, and above all peaceful people, and they should not have their image tarnished by a handful of malicious people.”
“It should be possible to track down the people [who do the racist chanting] if the police put their mind to it. It is just like in our country, where many, many people suffer every day. But they are silenced by the inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the authorities.”
