The Table Before Matchday 9: Why It Matters

Saturday’s Barcelona and Real Madrid victories are detailed in our October 10 LaLiga results analysis.

Through the eight completed Matchday 8 fixtures recorded by October 11, Barcelona have 24 points from eight games; Atlético Madrid and Real Betis have 19, with Real Madrid on 18. Sevilla and Real Sociedad both have 13 points, although Sevilla’s October 12 fixture is still pending at this writing.

The table may change after Levante vs Sevilla. Refer to the regularly updated LaLiga table rather than treating these numbers as final for Matchday 8. Our October 11 results analysis explains Betis’s 5–2 win and Sociedad’s 3–2 victory.

Five Games to Watch in Matchday 9

1. Real Betis vs Barcelona — Can Betis Disrupt the Perfect Start?

Saturday’s late-afternoon meeting in Spain is the defining fixture of the weekend. Betis come in with confidence after a 5–2 victory against Osasuna, when Isco scored twice. Barcelona have taken 24 points from their opening eight matches. This is a direct test of Betis’s ability to translate attacking form into points against the league leaders.

2. Real Madrid vs Sevilla — Last League Game Before El Clásico

Real Madrid host Sevilla on Sunday, October 18, one week before their first league Clásico of the season. Madrid’s 1–0 victory over Villarreal keeps them in touch with the leading group. Sevilla’s league position could change following their outstanding Matchday 8 trip to Levante.

For the wider context, see El Clásico dates and TV guide and Madrid’s Villarreal match analysis.

3. Espanyol vs Atlético Madrid — A Test of Atlético’s Momentum

Atlético enter Matchday 9 on 19 points after beating Deportivo Alavés 2–1. Espanyol drew 1–1 at Málaga in Matchday 8 and will want a stronger result at home. Expect the early stages to reveal whether Atlético can impose their tempo away from home.

4. Málaga vs Real Sociedad — Relegation Pressure Meets a Late Winner

Málaga’s previous result was a late 1–1 draw; see our October 9 Málaga–Espanyol match report for the stoppage-time equaliser.

Málaga are still chasing their first league victory after their 1–1 draw with Espanyol. Real Sociedad, meanwhile, edged Deportivo 3–2 in Matchday 8. The hosts need more goals without leaving the defensive gaps that have cost them points.

5. Villarreal vs Elche — Two Teams Seeking a Response

Villarreal narrowly lost 1–0 to Real Madrid in Matchday 8, while Elche drew 0–0 with Celta Vigo. Saturday’s meeting will test Villarreal’s attacking response against an Elche side that has shown it can keep games tight.

Other Matchday 9 Storylines

Rayo begin the next round with an unresolved game. Read why Rayo vs Athletic was abandoned.

Deportivo vs Levante, Friday October 16

The opening game gives Deportivo an immediate opportunity to respond to the 3–2 loss at Real Sociedad. Levante still have an outstanding Monday fixture against Sevilla, so their latest form should be rechecked closer to kickoff.

Valencia vs Athletic, Saturday October 17

Valencia drew 2–2 with Racing Santander in their latest completed game. Athletic’s abandoned match against Rayo must not be treated as a draw, loss or win; both clubs have a points gap to make up.

Osasuna vs Racing, Sunday October 18

Osasuna must recover defensively from conceding five against Betis. Racing collected a point in a 2–2 draw with Valencia.

Celta vs Alavés and Getafe vs Rayo

Celta take on Alavés after a goalless draw against Elche; Getafe face Rayo in Monday’s concluding fixture. The Rayo–Athletic abandonment leaves an uneven matches-played picture.
