5 Games to Watch in Laliga Matchday 8

1. Real Madrid vs Villarreal — Madrid Need a Response

Real Madrid return from the break under early pressure. Their 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid in Matchday 7 left them on 15 points, six behind leaders Barcelona after seven matches.

Villarreal arrive with eight points and have already shown they can create problems in open matches. For Madrid, the wider issue is the table: another dropped result could allow Barcelona, Atlético or Betis to increase the gap before the season reaches its first El Clásico of 2026/27 on October 25.

For projected starting XIs, the latest defensive availability and the score prediction, read our Real Madrid vs Villarreal Matchday 8 preview. Kylian Mbappé’s fitness remains a major storyline. Real Madrid diagnosed a hyperextension of the posterior capsule in his left knee on September 26. After an individual recovery session on October 5, the club reported on October 7 that Mbappé had returned to training with the group. That is a significant step toward Saturday’s Villarreal match, although his place in the final matchday squad has not yet been officially confirmed.

2. Barcelona vs Getafe — Can the Perfect Start Reach Eight Wins?

Barcelona have won all seven league matches so far and enter the round with 31 goals scored and only seven conceded. Their 3-1 win away to Sevilla in Matchday 7 extended the perfect start and moved them five points clear of both Atlético Madrid and Real Betis.

Getafe begin Matchday 8 on eight points. Their challenge is obvious: slow down the league’s most productive attack while avoiding the kind of early deficit that has allowed Barcelona to control games this season.

For the broader numbers behind Barcelona’s start, see our LaLiga Stats 2026/27 hub.

3. Deportivo Alavés vs Atlético Madrid — A Test for the Closest Challenger

Atlético Madrid return in second place after their derby win over Real Madrid. They have 16 points from seven matches and are currently one of Barcelona’s two nearest challengers.

Alavés, however, have started strongly enough to sit sixth on 11 points. A home win would pull them closer to the European places, while an Atlético victory would keep Diego Simeone’s side within striking distance of the leaders.

4. Real Betis vs Osasuna — Can Betis Stay in the Top Three?

Real Betis have quietly matched Atlético’s 16-point total through seven matches. Their Matchday 7 draw at RC Deportivo ended a run of victories, but Betis still enter Matchday 8 with a chance to remain firmly inside the leading group.

Osasuna have eight points and sit in a crowded middle section of the table. This is exactly the type of home fixture Betis will want to win if their early-season position is to become more than a short-term surprise. For the latest team news, probable XIs, stats and head-to-head context, see our Real Betis vs Osasuna 2026 preview.

5. Málaga vs Espanyol — Another Chance for Málaga’s First Win

Málaga open the round still searching for their first league victory. They have three points from seven matches and sit 20th after scoring only three goals.

Espanyol have seven points and are also in the lower half, which makes Friday’s opener important at both ends of the bottom-third battle. A Málaga win would immediately tighten the relegation picture before the rest of the weekend begins.

Other Matchday 8 Storylines

Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club

Both clubs enter the round on eight points, although Athletic have played only six league matches because their postponed Matchday 6 fixture against Levante is scheduled to be completed later in October. This match is an opportunity for either side to separate from the crowded eight-point group. For the latest injury news, projected XIs and a score prediction, read our Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club preview.

Real Sociedad vs RC Deportivo

Both teams have 10 points after seven matches. Real Sociedad arrive after a late 3-2 win at Valencia, while Deportivo have lost only once since returning to the top flight. The winner could move into the top half and closer to the European places.

Racing Santander vs Valencia

Racing and Valencia both need stability after difficult starts. Valencia enter Matchday 8 in the relegation zone on four points, while Racing have seven but have already conceded 21 goals.

Levante vs Sevilla

Matchday 8 closes on Monday night. Sevilla have 13 points and can strengthen their place around the European positions, while Levante are trying to move away from the bottom three. Levante also still have a postponed Matchday 6 fixture against Athletic Club to play on October 21.

What Changed Before Matchday 8?

  • Barcelona are still perfect: seven wins from seven leave them on 21 points.
  • Atlético won the Madrid derby: the 2-1 victory moved Atlético above Real Madrid and into second place.
  • Real Betis remain level with Atlético: both clubs have 16 points.
  • Real Madrid have ground to recover: they begin Matchday 8 six points behind Barcelona.
  • The relegation picture is already taking shape: Málaga, Valencia, Elche and Levante enter the round under pressure near the bottom.
