How Many Teams Are Promoted to LaLiga?
Three teams are promoted from LaLiga Hypermotion to LaLiga. The first two places in the final second-division table receive automatic promotion. A third club earns promotion through the playoff contested by the teams finishing third through sixth.

Which Teams Get Automatic Promotion?
The clubs finishing first and second in LaLiga Hypermotion are promoted automatically. They do not need to enter the playoff.
This makes the top-two race particularly valuable: finishing second guarantees promotion, while finishing third means having to survive two knockout rounds to reach LaLiga.
How Does the LaLiga Promotion Playoff Work?
The teams finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th enter the promotion playoff. It consists of two rounds:
- Semifinal 1: 3rd vs 6th.
- Semifinal 2: 4th vs 5th.
- Final: the two semifinal winners meet for the third promotion place.
Both the semifinals and final are played over two legs. The team that finished higher in the regular-season table plays the second leg at home.
Does the Higher-Finishing Team Get an Advantage?
Yes. Regular-season position continues to matter after a club reaches the playoff.
The higher-ranked team plays the second leg at home. More importantly, if the aggregate score remains level after the two legs and a 30-minute extra-time period, the team that finished higher in the regular season advances.
That gives third and fourth place a meaningful advantage over simply qualifying for the playoff in fifth or sixth.
Are There Penalty Shootouts in the LaLiga Promotion Playoffs?
Under the current playoff system, a tie that remains level after the two legs goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If the aggregate score is still level after extra time, the higher-finishing regular-season team is declared the winner.
That means the playoff does not normally require a penalty shootout to separate teams that finished in different league positions.
Do Away Goals Count in the Promotion Playoffs?
No. Away goals do not receive extra value in the current promotion playoff format.
If the aggregate score is tied after the second leg, the teams play extra time. If they remain level, regular-season position determines which club progresses.

Imagine the LaLiga Hypermotion season ends with Clubs A and B in the automatic promotion positions, while Clubs C, D, E and F finish third through sixth.

What Happens to the Three Relegated LaLiga Teams?
At the end of a standard LaLiga season, the clubs finishing 18th, 19th and 20th are relegated. They are replaced by the three promoted clubs from LaLiga Hypermotion.

Can Reserve Teams Be Promoted to LaLiga?
Reserve or dependent teams are subject to Spanish football’s rules governing the relationship between a senior club and its subsidiary teams. A reserve side cannot compete in the same division as its parent club.
This matters when interpreting promotion races involving reserve teams: sporting position alone does not override eligibility rules. The exact consequences depend on the competition regulations applying to the affected clubs and season.
How Is the LaLiga Hypermotion Table Decided?
Promotion is based on the final league classification, so points and applicable competition tiebreakers matter when clubs are competing for automatic promotion or playoff positions.

Why Finishing Third Is Better Than Finishing Sixth
Third and sixth both enter the playoff, but their paths are not equivalent. Third place faces sixth in the semifinal, hosts the second leg and holds the regular-season ranking advantage if the tie remains level after extra time.
The same principle makes fourth preferable to fifth. The regular season therefore continues to matter even after a team has secured a playoff position.
